Meditation Sound

As most of you know, many sounds have a vibrational quality that is soothing or agitating or even healing. Some people use music to put themselves in a good mood. Others may use music to relieve stress. Various sounds have the ability to change our moods, and even our blood pressure.

I have met people at metaphysical conferences who use music, sounds, and similar modalities to help people heal. If you consider that everything in existence is vibration, then you must acknowledge that vibration can produce results.

I found this nifty video that has wonderful meditation music for deep relaxation or sleep..

They claim this sound resonates to your 7 chakras. They say it also boosts dopamine in the brain. If this is true, spending a few minutes looking at the image and listening to the sound can give you a real brain boost. I wonder if people who have Parkinson’s disease have tried this with any positive results?

At any rate, I found this very soothing to listen to (and quite hypnotic). I hope you will find it pleasant, as well.

Incredible Kites

There is a man named Ray Bethell in Vancouver, Canada, who flies kites with more skill than anyone I have ever seen. He is in his 80s, and his skin is old and weathered from spending so much time in the sun.  And when he flies his kites, it is as if a beautiful visual symphony is playing.

He reminds us that we are not limited in any way. We can soar in the skies. We can feel the joy of freedom and weightlessness lift us up. I have watched this at least a dozen times, and every time I feel inspired.

Watch this video and feel your heart soar with the kites. Feel your energy dance and fly.

New Spirit Guides Book

Spirit Guides Front CoverI’m really pleased to announce the publication of my book, Spirit Guides (2nd Edition). Become More Effective by Finding Peace

Everyone is multi-tasking these days. They are tethered to their “Crackberries,” iPhones, iPads, smart phones and computers, so they are sending eMails at all hours. Even when they are supposed to be “at leisure,” they are mailing and texting during meals at restaurants, movies, baseball games, family outings, while driving, during classroom lectures, in the bathroom (both public and private), and in some cases, even during sex.

Years ago, there was a promise that technology would make us more productive. There are some ways in which it has made us more productive — I can edit this article without having to type it over from scratch, as I would have done before word processing programs existed. I can sell my domain names to people halfway around the world by using the internet, eMail and PayPal.

But there is a dark side — technology has enabled “spammers” to fill our in boxes with masses of junk. In some cases, the junk mail is so overwhelming that it causes people to lose their important messages among the spam.

Technology promised to give us more leisure time, as well. Presumably, the more leisure time was a result of having gotten all of our work done earlier than before. However — studies have shown that people (who are fortunate enough to have a job these days) are working more hours than ever. Obviously, in the workplace, one must do the bidding and put out all the little “fires” that the employer commands. But it is well documented that people end up doing a lot of things poorly when required to multi-task all the time. The human brain is not structured for it.

Yesterday, I saw a woman walking through a traffic-filled parking lot into a store. She had a baby cradled in her right arm, a toddler by the hand with her left arm, and her neck was bent to hold the cell phone between her ear and shoulder so she could carry on a conversation. There is no way she was giving adequate attention to either child. She was not watching for traffic as she crossed. But she was deeply engaged in a phone call that pulled most of her attention elsewhere.

The sad thing is that most people are unaware that they are performing poorly on multiple tasks. They don’t have that insight because too much of their brain is occupied trying to multi-task. And it is becoming evident that all of these short bursts of technological communication are making many people attention deficient.

How to Meditate

People who meditate tend to have lower stress levels, less anxiety, healthier blood pressure and more happiness than people who do not meditate. Meditators tend to have a stronger ability to focus and concentrate. As little as 15 minutes per day can be beneficial.

In meditation, we silence the mind. We let go of the silly, often frantic chatter that occupies our minds on most days. In doing so, we experience peace. We experience our eternal self. Our eternal self is so much more, so much greater than the petty worries of day-to-day living. When we know this, we are more able to detach from the trivial concerns, as we realize they are meaningless.

Beyond My Dreams – My Journey to the Crystal Palace

Back in 1984, I took a “Meditation” class. It was supposed to put us in touch with our Guidance. I had already been doing sitting meditation, having learned it at a Buddhist University near my house. I enjoyed the peace that came with it and I still practice it today.

This “new” meditation I was learning involved the instructor leading us on a guided meditation. She put on some calming music and had us close our eyes and relax as she gave us suggestions that took us on a “journey” to meet our Guides.

The journey was supposed to take us to our own special, private garden. I did make it to my garden by traveling in a beautiful boat that sailed down a calm river.

It was a lovely peaceful garden, but I was transported almost immediately away from the garden, through the air to a Crystal Palace. Continue reading

Mindfulness Meditation with Jon Kabat-Zinn

Jon Kabat-Zinn has a PhD. in Molecular Biology and teaches mindfulness meditation as a technique to help people cope with stress, anxiety, pain and illness. His methods were featured in the Bill Moyers PBS special called “Healing and the Mind.”

Kabat-Zinn deeply understands and explains very well why we benefit from meditation in terms of health, productivity, insight and general well being. I admire him, partly because he agrees with my statements that all the obsessive multi-taskers out there are suffering from ADHD. He understands the value of timelessness, stillness, pure awareness.

In this long video (over an hour) you can watch him show you how to discover your own awareness and find out who you actually are. He has a wonderful, balanced energy.

I recommend watching it many times. In parts, or all at once.

Om – Gayatri Mantra

By now we all know that “Om” or “Aum” is the Universal sound, the vibration. I heard this Mantra, called the Gayatri mantra by Deva Premal. It begins each sutra with “Om.”

It is the most amazing thing that when I play this mantra I smell incense like Nag Champa, though I have no incense in my house due to allergies. I just get the smell, not the smoke itself when I play this. But the perfume of the chant is lovely.

It begins with the voice for about two minutes then brings in other voices and instruments to create a hypnotic rhythm.

A sort of phonetic pronunciation of the mantra goes like this:

oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ
tat savitur vareṇyaṃ
bhargo devasya dhīmahi
dhiyo yo naḥ prachodayāt

According to Ralph T. H. Griffith in his 1896 work “The Hymns of the Rigveda,” a literal translation of the Gayatri Mantra is:
May we attain that excellent glory of Savitar the god:
So may he stimulate our prayers.

Sir William Jones paraphrased it to mean:
Let us adore the supremacy of that divine sun, the god-head who illuminates all, who recreates all, from whom all proceed, to whom all must return, whom we invoke to direct our understandings aright in our progress toward his holy seat.

And Swami Vivekananda said it means:
We meditate on the glory of that Being who has produced this universe; may He enlighten our minds.”

I like the Vivekananda meaning. When I hear the chant, I feel connected to Source. I know I am always connected because I AM Source, but with this chant it is palpable for me. I Hope you enjoy it as well.

Consciousness, Creativity and The Brain

This is a very long (1:49:24) video of a talk by film director David Lynch at UC Berkeley on the topic of “Consciousness, Creativity and The Brain.” He is joined by Quantum Physicist John Hagelin, Ph.D as they discuss opening up to new ways of thinking. They talk about opening to infinite possibilities.

They are both obviously practitioners of Transcendental Meditation. If you are not into that particular modality of meditation, no worries. Pay attention to the rest and the great info on creativity. Creation. Consciousness.

The first 7 minutes are introductions, if you want to skip ahead.

I enjoyed seeing David Lynch give a keynote speech at a Quicktime conference in Los Angeles many years ago. This time, he talks about enlightenment and intuition, and other things.
