7 Steps for Surviving Holiday Mercury Retrograde

Mercury goes retrograde two weeks before Christmas (December 11, 2010) in North America. Most astrologers consider the two weeks leading up to the retrograde motion to be somewhat “iffy” in terms of progress or making agreements, signing contracts, etc. as well.

As a double Virgo (Mercury rules Virgo), I have long been aware of and affected by Mercury Retrogrades. There always seem to be hiccups related to communications, agreements and contracts. Lots of delays, misunderstandings and indecisive people. It is also common for communications devices — computers, cell phones, etc., to act up.

Mercury retrograde periods are not good for starting projects that require several people to communicate effectively and be on the same page.

The retrograde continues through New Year’s Eve (throughout the world), so it is quite possible for people to misunderstand details about where they are meeting to celebrate, etc.

Mercury’s retrograde motion ends on December 29, 2010. During this retrograde (on December 21), we get a Lunar Eclipse. It’s corresponding Solar Eclipse will be January 4, 2011 — only a few days after Mercury Retrograde ends. Eclipses are about endings and clearing the way for new beginnings, sometimes abruptly. Having the eclipses coincide with Mercury retrograde can make for some real confusion around the holidays.

Mercury retrograde is GOOD for revisiting old unresolved issues and taking care of them once and for all. It seems the retrograde motion is compatible with going back energetically to deal with unfinished business. New business that is still unfinished — not so much.

Taking all that into consideration, here are my coping strategies to deal with the Holiday Mercury Retrograde:

  • Don’t start a business or initiate major projects until January 14, 2011.
  • If at all possible, postpone signing contracts, agreements, leases, etc. until about January 20, as well. If not possible to delay, make sure your lawyers scour the documents with a fine-toothed comb, checking and double-checking to make sure it says what you think it does.
  • Backup your computers and smart phones.
  • Double check your answering machines.
  • Make sure your batteries are strong in important devices, including your car.
  • Take great care in double checking party and celebration plans to make sure all participants have the same notion of what you’re doing.
  • Spend the necessary time to take care of old, unfinished business that pops up.

After all of these precautions, anything that arises should be minimal.

What Would Hera, Venus and Bast Say? Part 2

I had several friends who wanted to “play in the cosmos” and see what these wonderful Goddesses might have to say about some aspects of their lives. So here are some revelations!

Janice: Is there realty a Fountain of Youth?
Goddesses: Yes, it is your inner passion manifest for the world to see! You must be passionate about your life. What gives you inspiration, joy and happiness? What drives you and brings vitality into your life? Who supports your full expression of you? Accessing the Fountain of Youth is a matter of you getting to know your Self and learning how to live a passionately led life.

You don’t do this by compromising yourself and your ideals. You don’t do this by watching television (watching other people’s interpretation of life) a great deal of time. You don’t do this by judging or finding fault in others. Find out whom you are. See your grandness! Express your interpretation of love to the world and your inner light will course through every cell of your body. This light is your Fountain of Youth. You will always be young if you stay passionate about yourself and life!

What Would Hera, Venus and Bast Say? – Part 1

Be like the gods and laugh at yourselves!

I remember reading this or something like it years ago and not quite understanding the full meaning of the quote. I kind of got that it meant not to take life so seriously, but a 20 year old always takes her/himself seriously. Twenty year olds are at a juncture in their journey where everything is done in serious earnest. Now that I am older I take every opportunity to laugh at myself: my need to be right; the need to be perfect; any perceived indignation; and my judgment of others.

However what else do I need to learn? My friend Eve and I were having lunch musing over what the Goddess from all the ancient cultures would have to say about some of the things we worry ourselves with during the course of a day and what is really important about life. Here’s a part of our dream conversation with the Ancients.

Shirlyn: “Will I ever find the love of my life?”
Goddesses: “A more fitting question is will your love ever be able to catch up with you! Go live a full life and love will always find you!”

The Effects of Mercury and Mercury Retrograde

When I was a child there were two subjects I had a fascination about: Greek Mythology and Astrology. I was captivated by the stories of the gods and goddesses; their antics, affairs, fights, bravery and trickery. Astrology held a different kind of fascination. I started reading the daily astrology shorts in my newspaper curious about how my day might evolve; I don’t know why because what could possibly happen in a seven year olds life that isn’t somehow routine? Maybe I was trying to get a heads up on the right day to ask my parents for something I knew they would be somewhat against, like eating ice cream before dinner or watching television until 10 PM on a school night; what all seven year olds want!

Later on as I learned more about astrology I discovered I was on the wrong track in getting what I want from my parents. Continue reading

Sensuality Chakra – Spiritual Awareness

The second chakra vibrating in the Sacral Chakra Region is called the Sensuality Chakra. Our physical five senses (touch, smell, hearing, sight and taste) dominate how we perceive life. However, we have a multitude of spiritual senses we do not access until we acknowledge we are Spirit and begin our spiritual journey in the physical. This chakra represents our enhanced sensuality. Once our spiritual senses are accessed, we merge them with our physical senses. We begin to see things differently, hear Spirit more clearly, and feel, smell and taste more intensely. The spiritual symbol for this chakra is the dragon. Mythical dragons have healing powers and represent spiritual awareness. The colors of this chakra are a combination of violet and orange and it is located towards the front of the body just below the navel.

“Stephen” grew up in a very strict religious family environment. He was told to go to church, follow his religious teachings and always be a “good” person. He was taught to believe that anyone who did not attend church and believed in alternative spiritual practices such as meditation, yoga, channeling, and hands-on healing were doing the work of the devil. If someone claimed that they had visions or heard voices, there was something very wrong with them and this “illness” had to be corrected. Stephen had a “problem”; he was able to see people’s auras (energy vibrations surrounding their body) and know if they needed immediate help, whether it was directions to a location or some comforting words to help them feel at peace. He could also accurately anticipate the future.

The Lightheartedness Chakra – How We Choose To Learn Our Lessons

The first of the three chakras vibrating in the Sacral Chakra Region is called the Lightheartedness Chakra also known as the Svadhistana Chakra in Sanskrit.  The color of this chakra is a bright orange and it is located in the lower back.   This chakra represents our ability to learn our life’s lessons in the spirit of love, laughter, enjoyment and acceptance.  Each soul chooses challenging lessons lifetime after lifetime.

One soul does not have it easier than another.  No one soul is given harder challenges than another.  Everything is about perspective, therefore, the difficulty one experiences in learning their lessons is determined by the approach one takes when undergoing life’s challenges.   Our journeys can be fraught with pain and disappointment or filled with laughter and wisdom.  Will you approach life with a sense of dread, resentment and hate or will you approach life with a sense of wonder, anticipation and love?  Will you choose to break your leg or stub your toe in order to reach your life goals?

Sacral Chakra Region — Assimilation, Creation, Initiation, And Integration

As you may have read in earlier articles, the Root Chakra Region’s job is to anchor the soul into its physical body so that it may begin the journey of self-discovery, purpose and the learning of lessons  it has set up for itself in this incarnation.  The next region of the body, the Sacral Chakra Region allows the soul to assimilate into its new environment, create different strategies in order to learn its various lessons and initiate its plans into actions.

By now, the soul has now entered the body and is assimilating into its environment.  The process of assimilation includes:  adapting to the earth’s density, atmosphere, sound waves, energy patterns, and color vibrations; blending and reconnecting its energies with the those of its physical family, friends, teachers, enemies, lovers, and all others it will meet this life – these are souls it has journeyed with before and who have agreed to assist the soul in its learning; and adjusting to human consciousness which is limited in the understanding of the time/space continuum and creation – how integrate the physical aspect (limiting human consciousness) with the spiritual aspect (non-limiting timeless Spirit consciousness)  to create the highest potential for learning while on Earth.  This process continues for the rest of the soul’s physical life.

The Unpredictability Chakra And Our Potential

The Unpredictability Chakra is the third of three chakras located in the Root Chakra Region of the body.  It is located on the pelvic floor between the anus and genitals.  The Unpredictability Chakra represents raw uncontrolled and unpredictable energy.  Can energy be controlled?  People believe uncontrolled energy is dangerous because of its unpredictability.  However, there is strength, opportunity and originality in this kind of energy.  The opportunity to create and experience new situations, lessons, and connections should always be available.  This chakra represents our individuality created out of unpredictable potentiality.  It is my belief this is where the kundalini (Sanskrit for serpent or sleeping snake) energy, what the ancients call our fire and life force, is located.    The spiritual symbol of the Unpredictability Chakra is a sun (unpredictable energy) with a happy face.

“Raymond” was an accomplished visual artist who was blackballed by the art world.  His work had a way of “pushing” buttons and getting a rise out of people.  He admits he was arrogant and uncompromising in his work and felt his mission was to change people’s attitudes about social inequities and the “absurdities” of life.  Raymond has not produced any art work for the past seven years and is currently teaching at a university.  He feels useless, insecure and stagnant.   He said that his memory is poor, his vitality is very low, and he worries about money.  Raymond also had unresolved sexual trauma and, for years, struggled with his sexuality.  He felt alone and was not in contact with most of his family members and friends.

Our first session centered on grounding Raymond; he knew he wanted to enter the art world again but didn’t feel secure and could not figure out how to proceed.  He didn’t feel that fire or inspiration coming through as it had earlier in his career.  I cleared a lot of past life energies of that triggered Raymond to block receiving recognition, prestige, security and resources.  Raymond had past life trauma and negative energies of sexual abuse, greed, unworthiness, self-punishment, unforgiveness and appeasement.

Several of the past lives revealed that there are two family members and several friends, who had ostracized him from the visual art world, who, on a soul level, “remembered” that Raymond had maligned, abused and severely punish them in order to succeed.  When they harmed him in this life, they were “setting things right” so Raymond could not succeed in this life.  Raymond also “remembered” these lives and, on a soul level, agreed to suffer because he felt guilty for what he had done and wanted to appease them.

Simplicity Chakra – Increasing Your Intuition

The Simplicity Chakra is the second of three chakras located in the Root Chakra Region of the body.  It vibrates just underneath the left ovary and represents the ease in which you access and incorporate higher spiritual knowledge into your life.  Its spiritual symbol is a crystal disk with twelve lines of light shining through connecting to the body’s twelve cranial nerves.  This is our transmutation chakra.  When it is healthy and in balance, our life is easier, we are more intuitive and powerful, anticipating or seeing “what’s around the corner” trusting ourselves implicitly.  You will be able to step firmly forward with more fluidity in your hips, pelvis and lower back.

“Angel” was divorcing her husband after twelve years of marriage.  To the outside world she and her husband had the perfect marriage.  They were highly paid professionals who traveled, appeared happy and in harmony with each other, and lived in an upscale yuppie neighborhood with two dogs.  In reality they both knew they were not happy and felt a sense of apathy regarding their marriage; they were stuck and didn’t know how to move past some fundamental differences about spirituality, money and the expression of love and trust.  After unsuccessfully working on their marriage for two years, they both agreed to the divorce.
