What Do You Expect?

Are you getting what you expect? Or are you surprised by your life and the turns it takes? Do you feel that sudden changes in your life come out of nowhere? I talked to someone recently who was in a bad car accident. I’ll call her “Henrietta” for these purposes. She was broad-sided at an intersection by someone speeding through a red light. Her car rolled over many times. As she told me the grim details, I was grimacing as I was imagining her being cut from the car. It was a very dramatic and sad story.

As Henrietta ended her story, she said to me, “I know you believe we create our own reality, but I didn’t create this. I would never create something like this.”

“You get what you think about, whether you want it or not,” I said.

“I wasn’t thinking about it. I don’t think about car wrecks,” she replied.

“I’m not going to try to convince you that I’m right. You believe what you need to believe.” I responded.

Obviously, I still believe we all create our own reality, but it would have only caused her more pain if I kept insisting on that. There was no need to do that. She will never accept that we create our realities and that is fine.

Because I have known Henrietta a very long time and seen many of the things she’s been through, I know a bit about her thought patterns. I have seen her go through many hardships. Every time she finally starts to get a little money put back so she can feel more secure, a big crisis comes along to drain her bank account. I’ve seen it more than a dozen times.

I’ve also seen her in constant battle with people. Her current battle is with insurance companies. For the past 40 years, I have never known her not to be in a feud with someone. There is always someone who ticked her off, disrespected her or otherwise treated her badly.

I’m sure she is correct in saying she as not thinking specifically about a car wreck. But her underlying thoughts and beliefs include statements like this:

  • Life is hard.
  • You have to struggle for everything you get.
  • Getting ahead is almost impossible.
  • People don’t treat me right.
  • The world is full of a-holes.
  • Horrible things happen all the time.
  • It’s a dangerous world.
  • Life isn’t fair.

Because Henrietta has believed these things her whole life, she has continued to manifest struggle, crisis, hardship and difficult people to deal with. Going through all of that serves to further ‘harden’ Henrietta’s beliefs. She keeps experiencing all of the things she believes, so of course she can point to them as proof that she’s right.

That is true for ALL of us. Our thoughts and beliefs have created a reality that perfectly reflects them. And the experiences serve to fortify those thoughts and beliefs. It is a self reinforcing loop.

Most are expecting more of what is…whatever we are experiencing now is our predictor of what is coming in life. We need to get out of that endless loop. No matter what is going on in our lives right now, we will never change it unless we get into the gap between thoughts and experience and change our thoughts. There may be a delay before we see new experiences, because of the time lag. Our current experiences are the result of past thoughts.

We need to be persistent while we are waiting for our experiences to change. A certain level of patience is required. It is easier to be patient if we remember that Source always takes care of us. We are eternal Source energy ourselves. If negativity or anxiety arises, we can get back into that gap and visualize life how we want our lives to be.

Soon, our new thoughts, feelings, visions and beliefs will be creating experiences to reinforce them and it will become easier to maintain. We come to EXPECT the better life and the fact is, we ALWAYS get what we expect in life.
